There are injuries that come naturally as we get older and then there are some that are accelerated due to our jobs. Injuries that come naturally are those like hearing loss or visibility loss. Eventually, our bodies do start to slow down and they process things at a different rate. So, we start to lose our hearing or we start to see a little less with time. As we get older it gets hard to bounce back from illnesses. Some people find mobility to be an issue as well. We all know that these are common things to consider as we get older, but there are some injuries that can be a sign of getting older, but it is accelerated by the jobs we commit ourselves to every day.

Repetitive Stress Injuries

Occupational Health and Safety online magazine wrote an article about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). CTS is a form of repetitive stress injury. This means that this injury gets worse over time if you repeat the same behaviors over time. CTS is a common workplace injury that occurs when the median nerve, which passes through the wrist, causes pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand or wrist. Most commonly people feel it in the thumbs and hands. The article listed the kinds of jobs that are most sensitive to this kind of syndrome. Jobs that require forceful movements on the wrist, prolonged use of the wrist, vibrations on the hand or wrist, and placing wrists or hands in awkward positions for a long time. Jobs such as those that manufacture apparel, process food, and perform administrative work shows the highest level of CTS.

So what do you do? You document everything. Because Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is so specific it is hard to think of it as an aging issue; however, insurance companies are not willing to give you the compensation that easily. The main with filing worker’s compensation is that there is no real start date of your injury. Maybe you only have a date in which you started to feel the worst of the pain. If this is the case then you may need some serious work done to your hand. This may cause a complication because worker’s compensation only covers injuries that occurred at work. How can they tell what percentage of pain was felt at work versus how you use your hands outside of work?
