Why construction work is so dangerous

Construction Accidents

Buildings are constantly being erected, developed and repaired across San Diego. This is evidenced by the number of construction sites located around the city.

While the development of the city and jobs provided in the construction sector are positive factors, construction work does not come without risks. In fact, construction work is generally considered to be one of the more hazardous vocations in the U.S. Why is construction work so dangerous

The risk of falling

Construction sites are bustling environments with various projects going on at once. Depending on the size of the area, there could be dozens or even hundreds of workers carrying out their duties at any one time. Tools, electrical cords and ladders are just some of the key items that can potentially be trip hazards.

While it doesn’t take a fall from a height to result in a severe injury, many tasks in construction are carried out a significant distance from the ground. Scaffolding is one of the most common features of a building site, and a fall from scaffolding platforms can be deadly. A loose floorboard, obstruction or lack of safety rails all increase the risk of falling over. Even in cases where safety protocol has been followed to a tee, there is still a risk of falling from a height.

Accidents involving heavy machinery

Heavy machinery can reduce some of the physical strain that construction workers face. However, utilizing technology does not come without safety risks. Cranes, forklifts and other heavy machinery are routinely in operation on construction sites. Not only do these items weigh hefty amounts, the loads that they carry are also substantial. It only takes a brief lapse in concentration or uneven surface for deadly accidents to occur. With regard to heavy machinery, the stakes on construction sites are extremely high.

Accidents in construction can be fatal and even when they are not, injuries can be life-changing. If you have been caught up in a construction accident, you most likely have a legal right to compensation which could at least alleviate some of the financial strain.
