What accommodations can help a work-related TBI victim?

Brain Injury

A person who suffers a traumatic brain injury (TBI) at work may have a long road to recovery. They may have to take some time off work and might need certain accommodations if they’re able to return to the job.

The specific accommodations that an individual may require will vary based on the location, severity and effects of the TBI. Some of the common accommodations that TBI victims request when returning to work include the following.

Flexible scheduling

Recovering from a TBI may require flexible scheduling to allow the person to rest as needed and to attend medical appointments. If working from home is possible, this is often beneficial since they can have a comfortable place to work.

Environmental modifications

Environmental modifications, such as dimming lights or allowing noise-canceling headphones, can help with some symptoms of a TBI. These accommodations are beneficial for individuals who suffer from headaches, sensitivity to light and sound or trouble concentrating.

Cognitive support tools

TBI victims often have challenges with memory, organization and managing tasks. Accommodations, such as organization software and written instructions can help them to get these jobs done.

Communication adjustments

Difficulties with communication might make it necessary for employees to have instructions written out so they can refer to those instead of trying to rely on verbal instructions and memory. By having written instructions, they may be able to work independently and at their own pace.

Other accommodations, such as tailoring task goals to the employee’s abilities, might also be necessary. For some workers, returning to their previous job duties isn’t possible. Vocational rehabilitation paid for and supported by workers’ compensation coverage might help them to learn how to do a new job that can support their health and employment interests simultaneously.
