Common causes of electrocution on construction sites

Construction Accidents

Electrocution is one of the top hazards on construction sites, leading to many serious injuries and fatalities every year. Understanding the main causes can help workers stay safe.

Here are three common reasons why electrocutions occur on construction sites

Overhead power lines

Overhead power lines are dangerous on construction sites, especially when using cranes, ladders or scaffolds. Workers may inadvertently touch power lines or bring conductive materials too close, causing electrical currents to pass through their bodies. Properly marking overhead lines, maintaining safe clearance distances and training workers on power line safety can reduce these accidents.

Faulty or damaged electrical equipment

Construction sites rely heavily on electrical tools and equipment. If this equipment is faulty, damaged or improperly maintained, it becomes a severe risk. Exposed wires, faulty insulation and broken plugs can result in workers being electrocuted. Regular inspections, repairs, and replacement of damaged equipment are essential to reduce electrocution incidents.

Unsafe use of power strips

Many construction sites use extension cords and power strips to supply electricity to different areas. However, overloading these devices, using damaged cords or connecting multiple power strips at once can lead to electrical fires and shocks. Workers should always use heavy-duty extension cords rated for industrial use, avoid excessive connections and ensure cords are kept away from water and sharp objects.

Proper training and safety procedures can help reduce the risk of electrocution on construction sites. Unfortunately, where there is electricity, there is always some sort of risk. Even if you and your employer take every precaution, you may still be injured.

If you have been injured on the job, then workers’ compensation might be available. To find out more about this, it may help to seek some legal guidance.
