3 occupations with a high risk of TBI

Any workplace can pose a risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, workers in certain occupations may be at high risk due to their duties or elements in their workplace.

Below are three examples of such occupations:

1. Construction workers

Jobs in the construction industry offer numerous benefits, including great pay, high demand for workers, access to advanced technology and so on. However, the industry is also considered dangerous, as workers are at a high risk of injuries, including TBI.

Different factors lead to the increased risk, including working at height, such as on scaffolds, roofs and ladders, which can increase the likelihood of falls. Being struck by moving vehicles on site has also been linked to TBI among construction workers.

2. Delivery drivers

Delivery drivers are at a high risk of slip and fall accidents. When delivering items, a driver can encounter uneven pavements, wet surfaces or obstacles on the path that cause them to fall. In turn, they may sustain minor injuries or serious ones, such as TBI.

A worker in a warehouse may also be struck by a forklift, resulting in TBI.

Additionally, cases of warehouse workers being hit by objects falling or pallets collapsing are not uncommon. Other TBI risk factors in a warehouse include falls caused by spills and the commotion of people and objects in the loading dock, which can lead to a serious accident.
