Ladders can be very useful tools, and they’re necessary in many industries. They can also be used safely when workers are intent on doing so. Just like with other tools, though, these workers need to know how to focus on careful and safe operation.

After all, injuries from falls are incredibly common, and a fall from a ladder could have catastrophic results. It could cause spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and much more. It could even be fatal. So, what should workers know to stay safe while using a ladder?

Three points of contact

First and foremost, whenever someone is ascending or descending a ladder, they should try to keep three points of contact at all times. This means that they shouldn’t carry tools in their hand, they shouldn’t climb the wrong side of the ladder and they should never rush. Slow and careful movements are the key.

Risky decisions

Workers should also avoid doing anything that is unnecessarily risky, even if it makes the job go more quickly. For instance, they should never lean from the top of a ladder or try to move the ladder while they’re still standing on it.

Adhering to safety regulations

Finally, workers should always read the safety documentation and warning labels on the ladder. They should obey all weight limits. They should never climb to the top rungs of the ladder. They should ensure that they have the right type of ladder for the job. Only one worker should use the ladder at a time.

Injuries may still happen

Unfortunately, accidents on the job do happen, and even safe and careful workers could be injured. Those who are must know how to seek fair workers’ comp benefits.
