The life-changing impact of a TBI

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2024 | Brain Injury |

No one thinks that an accident at work can change their lives. Yet, if that accident results in a traumatic brain injury, there could be long-term repercussions.

Furthermore, it could occur from a simple slip and fall that occurs from walking across a wet floor.

How can a fall result in a TBI?

A slip and fall is the second-leading cause of workplace accidents and result in approximately 700 deaths each year. They can happen in numerous settings, encompassing almost every industry, such as:

  • Wet floors from spills or mopping
  • Icy sidewalks between the parking lot and the building
  • Uneven surfaces
  • Cluttered floors without a clear path
  • Poorly lit areas

Falls are also the leading cause of TBIs; however, the severity can vary significantly:

1. Mild TBIs might include headaches, dizziness, confusion and temporary loss of consciousness

2. Moderate to severe TBIs can involve prolonged unconsciousness, severe headaches, repeated vomiting, seizures and physical impairments, including:

  • Weakness in arms and legs
  • Problems with balance and coordination
  • Fatigue
  • Issues with hearing and seeing

In addition to physical problems, there are also cognitive and emotional challenges. Memory loss, inability to stay focused and difficulties with problem-solving are common in people with a TBI.

As the full depth of the injury is realized, a person may become depressed, withdrawn and anxious. This could lead to them feeling isolated and strain their relationships.

The long-term adverse effects keep growing. After five years, 57% of those with a TBI are disabled, 55% no longer have a job, 33% need help with their daily activities, 29% have either an alcohol or substance use disorder and 12% live in a skilled nursing facility or some other type of assisted living home.

If you or your loved one suffered a TBI from a work-related injury, there will be many challenges ahead. Medical treatments, hospital stays and rehabilitation take both time and money. It’s vital that you receive workers’ compensation to help with medical expenses and replace lost income.
