It is certainly not the way we wanted to start the new year, but we are learning that a man in nearby Bonsall was killed while he was riding his motorcycle

It happened in the early morning hours of January 1. The California Highway Patrol tells us that a 25-year-old man who lives at Camp Pendleton was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of 76. That was when he struck another man riding a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. The 25-year-old vehicle driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was later arrested when it was determined he was under the influence.

At Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP, we know that motorcyclists face so many dangers when they go out riding. If you or a loved one are injured, you can count on us when you need a San Diego motorcycle accident attorney.

SO MANY MOTORCYCLES

Did you know that there are nearly 900,000 registered motorcycles in California? That number is sure to rise. We know that the state offers amazing scenery and year-round wonderful weather. according to the latest reported numbers.

We also know that motorcyclists face more dangers than regular vehicle drivers do. They simply do not have much protection. Even when a motorcyclist is wearing a helmet, there is nothing between them and the force of a vehicle slamming into them in an accident.

For the latest reporting year in the state, there were 14,418 injuries and 548 fatalities due to motorcycle accidents. This is an astounding number. We often represent clients who have been in motorcycle accidents and the injuries can be severe:

  • Severe road rash
  • Lacerations or amputations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Broken or dislocated bones

Even minor injuries can cause major medical bills. Imagine the medical costs associated with the traumatic injuries listed above. In the event that a person needs long-term care, the costs will rise further.

WHY THEY HAPPEN

Motorcycle accidents happen for much of the same reasons that regular vehicle accidents do: impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and drivers who speed.
We also know that motorists tend to ignore motorcyclists as if they do not belong on the roadways. This can lead to major accidents. If a driver does not afford the same respect to a motorcyclist that they do to other vehicles, then they should be held responsible for the injuries they cause.
