We know that when you think about workplace injuries, your mind probably jumps to traumatic things that can happen like people falling multiple floors or getting hurt by a hand tool. Yes, there are many nonfatal work injuries and illnesses reported each year. Around 2.8 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

At Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP, we also know that there are many repetitive stress injuries that plague workers as well. Perhaps the most well-known of these is carpal tunnel syndrome. Do you know what to do if a doctor tells you that you’ve developed CTS because of your job?

When you need a San Diego carpal tunnel syndrome attorney, you can count on our team to get the compensation you deserve.

WHAT HAPPENS?

Carpal tunnel is amazingly common:

  • It affects around 1 in 20 adults
  • Between 3 and 6 percent of the population
  • Between 2007 and 2014, there were 140,000 CTS workers’ compensation claims in California

Researchers did find some patterns to those who get CTS. Female workers are 3.3 times more likely to get CTS. They also found that the top industries in which workers develop CTS are:

  • Textile, fabric finishing, and coating mills
  • Apparel accessories and other apparel manufacturing
  • Animal slaughtering and processing

You can see that officer workers are not there, despite the popular belief that only those who type get carpal tunnel syndrome.

WHAT IS IT?

There is an actual carpal tunnel on the lower part of your wrist. Its purpose is to house your median nerve and several tendons that allow your wrists and hands to function. When this area is compressed, it can cause pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling.

There are ways to prevent CTS and employers would be wise to heed them. Regular breaks of adequate length goes a long way towards reducing CTS, as does the use of ergonomic workspaces and tools.

Those who suffer from CTS often end up having to wear a brace at work or at home to relieve the pain and they often need pain medications. There are times when surgery is even necessary to relieve the symptoms.
