The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced yet another recall that could potentially affect California consumers. Ruiz Food Products is recalling 2.5 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry taquitos that may have been contaminated with both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.
The company decided a recall was necessary when they learned that onions used in the taquitos were recalled by their supplier for the same contamination reasons. While there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses from eating the taquitos, we know that this is only one example of how the products we purchase every day can cause us and our loved one’s harm.

We have seen plenty of recalls lately and not all of them revolve around food. Many have to do with faulty vehicle parts that can cause brake failure or engine stalling. When you think about it, we rely on thousands of products to get us through our day. Our coffee maker alone may have parts from more than five manufacturers. Now consider the coffee, the cream, and sugar.
The bottom line is this – we use and consume so many products that we think little of our safety when we do so.
Unfortunately, one look at the government website that tracks current recallsshows us that millions of Americans could potentially be harmed by their everyday products.
Often, the problem is with product labels. Companies are required to list hazards and side effects their customers can expect from using their products. A failure to do so could lead to unintentional injuries. Food products should list all ingredients, including allergens so that customers know what they are consuming. Also important are dosage labels for medications. If they are wrong, people could overdose or under-dose on their medications, both of which can have devastating health consequences.
Many products are poorly designed, making them unsafe for consumers. We often see this with appliances or furniture that is unstable even when put together and installed correctly as well as with many vehicle parts.
Manufacturing errors alter a product from its original design and can lead to consumer injuries.
