We want to bring you a story from a bit out of the city today. Last week, a suspected drunk driver was heading the wrong way on Interstate 15 near Rainbow when he struck another vehicle. The wrong-way driver, a 23-year-old man, was killed in the accident.

A 20-year-old woman in the other vehicle was also killed.

Police received a call regarding a driver heading the wrong way down the interstate, but the driver failed to stop for police. He continued the wrong way at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred.

Incidents like this are not uncommon in California and drunk drivers are not the only hazard motorists face on a daily basis. Do you know what to do in the event of a car accident that was caused by someone else?

THE STATISTICS

The latest reporting year for California saw the following:

  • 3,387 traffic fatalities
  • 11,942 serious traffic injuries

In San Diego, there were 9,237 people injured or killed in traffic accidents.

Injuries from car crashes can range from minor bumps and bruises to much more serious problems. We commonly see the following as a result of car accidents:

  • Spinal cord and brain trauma
  • Severe internal organ damage
  • Amputations and lacerations
  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Whiplash injuries

Many of those injuries require immediate and extensive medical care. Often, rehabilitation is needed for a person to fully heal from their injuries. If someone ends up disabled for the short or long-term, they could lose their jobs, something that will significantly impact their families.

HOW THEY HAPPEN

While we realize that sometimes accidents are nobody’s fault, we often find that driver negligence plays a role.

In California, drunk drivers cause more than 25 percent of the fatal accidents in the state. People who make the decision to drink and drive jeopardize the lives of everyone around them.

California has passed numerous laws to cut down on distracted driving, but we still see far too many accidents happen because a driver was sending a text message or watching a video on their phone.

California drivers cite speeding and aggressive driving as their main safety concern on the roadways, both of which can lead to serious accidents.
