Many people have heard of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but few really know exactly what it is. Most people just associate it with workers who type all day, but that is not the reality.

A new CDC report shows that there are many more jobs than people realize that put people at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome.

The CDC wanted to figure out ways to prevent CTS for two reasons:

  • It can cause extreme pain and suffering to those affected by it.
  • It costs the US healthcare system around $2 billion a year.

Do you know what your options are if you develop CTS due to your work-related duties?
If you need an exceptional El Centro carpal tunnel syndrome attorney, you can count on the experienced team at Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP to be by your side. They will stop at nothing to get you the compensation you deserve for your injury.

WHAT IT CTS?

The actual carpal tunnel is an area in your wrist that houses your median nerve and several tendons. If this area is compressed, the nerve can be negatively affected causing pain, numbness, weakness, and tingling. The condition can keep people from being able to perform their jobs. 2.7 percent of the US population suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome.

In the CDC study, they found that people who engage in jobs involving repetitive activities with their hands were most likely to develop CTS. This includes fields like apparel manufacturing, food processing, and administrative work. The highest incidents of CTS occur in telephone operators, coffee shop and counter attendants, and electromechanical assemblers.

Employers in fields that are at high risk for employees developing carpal tunnel syndrome should have measures in place to prevent the problems. This can include regular breaks of adequate length as well as the use of more ergonomic workspaces and tools.

Treatment for CTS can range from a person having to wear a special brace around their wrist to corrective surgery that could keep a person from working for a period of time.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Many people think they have to simply put up with the symptoms of CTS, but they do not. This is a common work injury that should be covered by workers’ compensation. We recognize that there are times when insurance companies or an employer will not recognize that your CTS is a result of workplace duties. At Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP, we will fight for your rights.

If you have been denied coverage of your CTS-related expenses, we will work to get you the compensation you deserve. This includes medical expenses and lost income if you are unable to work. We will also pursue punitive damages against your employer if they willfully allowed your injury to occur by not implementing preventative measures.
