We want to bring you a story from another part of California because it highlights some of the workplace safety concerns we want to share with you. Marriott International hotel employees have been on strike in Chicago and now they have been joined by workers in Boston and parts of California.

In California, around 2,500 Marriott hotel workers have been picketing outside of seven hotels.

“For too long Marriott workers have struggled to get by, been forced to work multiple jobs, sustained workplace injuries, and had their hours cut,” said D. Taylor, president of the Unite Here union.

At Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP, we know that hotel workers can sustain many types of workplace injuries. They often have to carry heavy objects, repeat the same motions over and over again. They also work in high-stress environments.

Do you know where to turn if you sustain an injury at your workplace?

When you need a work injury attorney in San Diego, you can count on the experienced team at Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP to be by your side.

The Dangers

In 2016, there were around 2.9 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses reported, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The top industries for these injuries and illnesses are:

  1. Healthcare and social assistance
  2. Manufacturing
  3. Retail trade
  4. Accommodation and food services
  5. Transportation and warehousing
  6. Construction

Even if your job is not covered on that list, that does not mean workplace accidents and injuries do not happen. Anyone who works is susceptible to an injury in their workplace, especially at the hands of negligent or careless employees and employers.

Most people associate workplace injuries with visible trauma, things like broken bones, nail gun injuries, falls, etc. While these are certainly common, we also know that there are other types of injuries that we need to be aware of and concerned about.

Repetitive stress injuries are very common in employees who are asked to perform the same repetitive task over and over again for long periods at a time. The most well-known RSI is carpal tunnel syndrome, but there are others. These injuries are covered by workers’ compensation, but they can be harder to prove that they happened due to workplace actions.

We want to note that mental illnesses can also be caused due to work conditions. High-stress jobs often see workers experience depression, anxiety, and even PTSD. Again, these illnesses are hard to pinpoint on a work environment, but they can also be covered by workers’ compensation.
