Today we want to bring you an update of what has happened since Roberta Walker was hit by a vehicle while she was cycling in San Diego. You may remember this accident from a few months ago. Walker is a community leader who has been an advocate for improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety throughout the city.

She was struck while riding on Coast Highway on December 8 and suffered severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, fractured vertebrates, as well as a broken clavicle. She has moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center where she works hard towards a full recovery. Walker has had multiple spinal and brain surgeries over the last two months and has experienced complications.

More than $90,000 has been raised, much of which will be used to pay her medical bills and home renovations so she can move around more easily. Since the accident, the Coast Highway 101 corridor has been upgraded to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

At Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP, we know those bicycle accidents are still far too common and can leave victims with severe injuries. When you need a San Diego bicycle accident attorney, call us today.

The Dangers Out There

We know that for the latest reporting year in California, there were:

  • nearly 12,000 bicyclist injuries
  • 147 bicyclist fatalities.

When it comes to our area, we know that the problem is compounded because of our population. For the same year, there were 457 bicyclists injured or killed in San Diego. We always want to stress that a bicycle accident can lead to injuries far worse than those experienced in regular vehicle accidents. When a person on a bicycle is struck, they often suffer from many of the following injuries:

Much of what happened with Roberta Walker. She, like many bike accident victims, faces a long road to recovery. Many victims are permanently disabled.

We know that bicyclists and pedestrians are vulnerable to drivers who are not paying attention to the roadway. Often, this is the result of distracted driving. When a driver makes the choice to look at their text messages or watch a video, they are putting people in danger.

A continual problem for pedestrian and cyclists is drunk drivers who speed through right-of-ways and intersections.
