The good news is that the number of accidental deaths in the United States dropped in 2017 from the previous year. We saw 5,147 fatalities in the American workplace. Still, that number is still close to the highest it has been in a decade. The article points out that one cause for the higher numbers is an increase in drug overdoses by workers, another casualty of the growing opioid epidemic.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows us that there are some jobs that are inherently more dangerous than others.

Do you know what the most dangerous jobs are?

At Hiden, Rott & Oertle, LLP, we are going to share them with you. We also want you to know that if you need a San Diego work injury attorney, you can count on us to be by your side, fighting for you to get the compensation you deserve.

The Most Dangerous Occupations

This list is compiled using BLS data for 2017. You may find some things you expected, but we are willing to bet there are some jobs on here you did not even think about.

*These numbers are calculated using total fatalities per 100,000 workers.

  • Fishers and related fishing workers
  • Logging workers
  • Aircraft pilots and flight engineers
  • Roofers
  • Refuse and recyclable material collectors
  • Structural iron and steel workers
  • Driver/sales workers and truck drivers
  • Farmers, ranchers, and agricultural workers
  • Landscaping supervisors and groundskeepers
  • Electrical power-line installers and repairers

That rounds out the top ten. Surprisingly, firefighters and police officers do not come onto the list until it reaches near the 20s.

Work injuries are usually preventable and employers have a large role to play in worker safety. They should always provide workers with the proper training to perform each job they are asked to do. This also includes regular safety training for all employees, regardless of the industry.

Workers should also be provided with the proper safety gear to do their job. This includes all appropriate clothing, headgear, eyewear, harnesses, respiratory equipment, and more. Remember, not all work injuries are blunt trauma incidents. Often, they are long-term injuries that do not manifest symptoms for years down the line. This can be the case with repetitive stress injuries, workplace mental health problems, as well as chronic conditions like COPD and cancer.
