The recent tragic case of a Wake Forest University assistant basketball coach who punched someone during an altercation has caught our attention. Why? Because, it highlights how brain injuries are unexpected and can happen in ways that we don’t normally think of.

It happened in New York and has been ruled a homicide. Sandor Szabo mistook Jamill Jones for an Uber driver one night and began banging on his window. Jones got out of his vehicle and punched Szabo, knocking him to the pavement, causing him to lose consciousness. Szabo later died from a blunt impact to the head that caused a brain injury, according to the medical examiner.

LIFE CHANGING

There are many different ways to suffer a traumatic brain injury. Every brain injury is different and the outcomes vary for everyone who experiences them. Much depends on how the injury happened, the level of force involved, and how quickly effective treatment is received. We want to highlight some of the ways that traumatic brain injuries happen.

Sports Injuries: Playing sports can lead to injuries ranging from concussions to more serious trauma such as a skull fracture.

Vehicle Accidents: Getting into a vehicle accident is a traumatic event. Any time thousands of pounds collide with one another, our bodies are thrown around and our brains can suffer serious damage.

Assaults: Any assault that results in a blow to the head can cause serious brain trauma. Often, a person who is assaulted takes a hit to the head from a heavy object, but fists can cause major damage as well. Often overlooked is the damage caused by domestic violence, which can be particularly problematic because people often do not, or are not able to, seek treatment right away.

Work Accidents: When working around heavy machinery, employees should have proper equipment and be properly trained. If they aren’t, major injuries can occur. Slip and fall accidents in the workplace can also lead to the head being impacted.

These are just a few of the ways people sustain brain injuries, but any time someone suffers a blow to the head or experiences whiplash, they could suffer a brain injury.
